The fig belongs to the second kind.
Its discreet skin conceals a surprising interior: hundreds of tiny inverted flowers protected inside the fruit, turning every fig into a kind of secret garden.
Perhaps that is why it has always felt so special to us. Because to discover it, you have to open it.
And when you do, colour, seeds, texture and that intense sweetness appear — all announcing the end of summer.
A deeply Mediterranean fruit
The fig has been part of the Mediterranean landscape and culture for thousands of years. Fig trees have traditionally grown beside homes, orchards and country paths, offering shade and fruit during the warmest months.
In Andalusia, figs belong to a simple culinary memory built around ripe produce, harvested at exactly the right moment and enjoyed with very little need for transformation.
September is one of those moments.
As summer slowly begins to fade, the garden still holds on to some of its most intense flavours. Among them, the fig.
September’s guest ingredient
That is why we have chosen the fig as September’s guest ingredient at Patio del Posadero.
For the first edition of Brunch Collection · La Vuelta a la Huerta, we wanted to tell the story of this precise moment of the year: when we are still enjoying the warmth and abundance of summer, but slowly beginning to look towards autumn.
In our September brunch, the fig appears alongside honey and walnuts, within a menu that also features grapes, courgette, tomato, aubergine, fresh herbs and extra virgin olive oil.
Simple, familiar ingredients with a deeply Mediterranean identity.
The secret is inside
But there is something even more fascinating about the fig.
What we usually call the “fruit” is actually a structure containing many tiny flowers on the inside. Instead of opening outward like most flowers, the fig tree keeps them hidden within.
So when we cut a fig in half, what we see is much more than a piece of fruit.
It is almost a tiny garden enclosed within itself.
We love that image because it also reminds us of Patio del Posadero: discreet from the outside, yet revealing an unexpected world once you step through the door.
September: La Vuelta a la Huerta
